The county government of Machakos has been urged to renovate the Kasuitu bridge to save it from being swept away by the swollen River Athi.
Speaking to this writer at the bridge on Wednesday, residents from Kasuitu slum expressed fear for what they referred to as a time bomb waiting to explored.
"Look at the way this bridge is dangling dangerously as the most part of its base has been eaten up by water, it was constructed several decades ago hence need to be renovated," said Nancy Wairimu.
Ms Wairimu said the residents were using the bridge with fear to connect to Athi River town because they do not have an alternative way to cross the swollen river.
Ms Wairimu said there was need for the leadership of Machakos County to tour the bridge to assess the situation.
Stephen Ndunda, on his part castigated the region's elected political leaders for allegedly ignoring the slum and its residents.
Ndunda said no leader including the governor had since 2012 general elections visited the area apart from Mavoko MP Patrick Makau who did so last Sunday.
Walter Mbuva, a village elder said the residents had got right to demand the bridge to be renovated before it is swept away by waters in River Athi.
The residents said the renovation would increase confidence to them when using it thereby limiting instances of mortality cases on the bridge.
