Residents living around Ndarugu river in Nakuru West have been advised to move to higher grounds so as to avert cases of flood disasters should the river break its banks.

The Kenya Red Cross Nakuru chapter coordinator Mr. Benson Gichimu advised the residents to heed the call immediately before the situation gets out of hand noting that the ongoing heavy rains had the potential of causing serious risks to the residents.

"I would like to advise residents living along the Ndarugu river to be very careful and move to safer grounds because with these heavy rains chances of the river breaking its banks and wreaking havoc are too high. Take an earlier initiative to move especially residents in Barut," he said.

Gichimu further added that they were working closely with the security department and county disaster management team to attend to and alleviate cases of calamity and floods incidences noting that they were currently engaged in Solai and Pondamali areas where heavy rains had left a trail of destruction.

"Currently, we are distributing foodstuffs and bedding to victims of last week's floods in Solai and  a few locations in Pondamali and we really commend the police and the disaster management team who have ensured a smooth running of the exercise," he said.
