A section of Entorobo residents in Kitutu Masaba constituency held a meeting on Monday and challenged the government to help them recover a piece of land that has been used as a market center for many years.
The team led by interim chairperson of the market Alloys Nyakundi said part of the land meant for the market has been grabbed by a private developer who has since initiated construction of private premises.
According to them, the piece of land belongs to the community and was donated by their forefathers during the time when batter trade was popular in the region.
“We have been robbed part of our land by someone who claims to be the owner. This land was donated by our forefathers many years ago to boost batter trade in the region. We are appealing to the government to chip in and help us recover the land because the developer has forged documents to stage manage ownership,” he said.
According to him, the community will stand firm to recover the land and threatened to wage an endless fight with the developer if the stalemate wasn’t solved in time.
“It’s good that we have notified the authorities that the land belongs to us. We don’t care about the forged documents. We will fight hard to reclaim our land using all means because the market has been boosting our economy around,” he added.
Efforts to reach the accused man identified as Francis Gichana were unfruitful since he could neither pick this writer's calls nor reply to texts.
