Two hundred and thirty needy students from Kisumu County on Wednesday benefited from a Sh100 million full scholarships programme from the county government.
The project unveiled by Governor Jack Ranguma at Tom Mboya Labour College will see six students from each of the 35 wards across the county get their fees fully paid by the county government.
The beneficiaries will also get books, transport, sanitary towels and uniforms in the four year program targeting the needy but bright students.
Speaking during the unveiling of the project, Ranguma said his government was committed to transforming education and giving opportunities to deserving cases.
“Education is a talent that we cannot replace and that is why when it comes to education we have to put politics aside and come together as leaders from this county so as to help our children,” said Ranguma.
The project has also recruited 20 students living with disabilities through a cretarea described by the county chief as a quarterly system which took into consideration the county’s geographically.
“This project ensured it touched on the people from all villages, and as we move forward we want to make the process water-tight so as to ensure only needy cases benefit,” he said.
Ranguma said he will engage the county assembly to upscale the program by adding funding to ensure that more people benefit from the program.
“I am aware of the big number of needy students from this area, and some of them have learnt about this project after the application had been closed. We cannot leave them out hence we will have to discuss how to help them in collaboration with our MPs as well,” he said.
