Ordinarily, this street behind Maasai Market would be filled with cars parked on either side. They belong to the bankers and businessmen who work here.
It's a Sunday, however, and none of them is working. The street is empty, save the few passers-by.
Around 11 am, the road is sealed of on both ends to create some sort of park. They start to show up one after the other. They are as young as nursery school children to as old as university students.
They may differ in age but a common hobby has brought them together. Skating!
This has become a new hobby among Vegans and it is normal to see one or two of them in town.
They come from different backgrounds too. The hustlers like it as much as the barbies.
On this street you will see them armed with their shoes and protective gear; helmets and knee pads. Some are pros and make it look easy.
The amateurs, however, tell you the truth. Skating is not as easy as riding a bike. It's more challenging but once you learn how to do it, it becomes as easy as walking.
The trainees fall time and time again before they can master how to cheat gravity. The trainers don't give up on them, and before long, the once amateurs become gurus.
Adrenalin junkees skate at high speeds while the more cautious ones skate gracefully in no rush.
Once or twice a kid will fall and the mother will come quickly to pick him/her up.
Skating is becoming more and more popular as the numbers swell each Sunday.
Its nice to see that Vegans are embracing it. Who knows the next best skater may just come from here!
