Speaking to journalists on Friday in Kisii town, Kisii University chaplain Father Lawrence Nyaanga asked commissioner Chege Mwangi to take a step to chiefs and their assistants who are encouraging brewing of alcohol in their areas of jurisdiction.

Father Nyaanga accused Matunwa chief and Boronyi sub-chief of being ignorant and corrupt for boycotting the raid operation as planned.

“We were together with the two chiefs from Kiogoro Division because we had agreed to raid homes that brew alcohol in their areas, but minutes later when we were about to leave they disappeared to thin air. However, some of the chiefs in other places like Bobaracho and Kegati have been supportive in the fight against alcohol. It’s a fraction of them who are defying in the fight and I ask the county commissioner to take a step against them,” said the anti-drug abuse campaigner.

He added, “The government must be in the forefront if we want to stalk the alcohol business that has caused deaths and even broken families.”

Father Nyaanga lamented that the chang’aa or alcohol business has caused drop outs and said the only way the menace would come to the end is through joint efforts in the war against the venture.

He also asked members of the public to be vigilant and assist with information on those homes that are engaged in the business so that a step can be taken against them.

The cleric advised those engaged in the business to have an alternative way of income generation and avert from the alcohol business.

“Alcohol has broken many homes. Others desert their homes to brewer centers where they do menial job for chang’aa. Some take huge loans for the alcohol business and my advice is that they should use the loans for other meaningful projects,” said Father Nyaanga.

Father Nyaanga with Administration Police officers from Kiogoro Division led by Inspector Barack Ochieng’i, stormed three homes in Matunwa sub-location and destroyed 5,000 litres of crude alcohol and containers, a raid that was carried out on Tuesday morning.

Father Nyaanga challenged the judiciary to look into the fines and increase it so that offenders can feel the pinch and abandon the activity.
