Over 50 stray dogs have been killed in Kuresoi Village in Molo in the last three days in bid to control the outbreak of rabies in the area.

Residents and the Nakuru Veterinary department started killing the dogs after increased cases of people being bitten.

A week ago, a resident died while being treated of a dog bite.

“We became concerned especially after many children were bitten on their way to school. Women have also become victims of the bite and treatment for the bites were too expensive. A normal anti rabies venom cost between Sh5,000 and Sh18, 000 yet many people could not afford it, “said Benard Waweru, a resident.

Waweru was speaking to journalists in Molo on Sunday where he added that they would continue with the exercise until they rid the region of all the stray dogs.

In an interview, Nakuru Agriculture CEC Stanley Chepkowny admitted that they had witnessed the signs and symptoms of rabies.

“We will carry out free vaccination for rabies, Rift Valley Fever and lump skin disease to avoid any more outbreaks. We're appealing to all dog owners to kill any dog that will exhibit symptoms of rabies and keep it locked. However, they should also bring all their dogs for vaccination,” he added.
