Kapsaret MP Oscar Sudi has faulted President Uhuru Kenyatta’s rejection of the Higher Education Loans Board (Amendment) Bill 2015 that could have made it possible for students from poor families access loans.
Speaking at Cheptiret Market on Sunday, Sudi said university education will now only be meant for the rich since the poor will not access to it as it is expensive.
"The President’s move not to sign the Bill into law saying the government has no money is unwarranted since he has put the future of poor and bright students into jeopardy since it will be hard for them to further their education,"he said.
The MP said the Jubilee administration has a lot of money to loan the students only if the President seals corruption loopholes in his government.
"I urge the President to reconsider his move of rejecting the Helb Bill and bring it back to Parliament for further amendments if he really feels what poor students are feeling to pursue their studies," he said.
He added that this will ensure education is accessed by all; the poor and rich students thus Kenya’s future will be bright unlike now where quality education is only meant for the rich.
The Helb Bill that was rejected sought to guarantee loans from children from poor families where they were only required to swear an affidavit before being given an interest waiver and exempted from late payment penalties.
