A lightening survivor in Kisii has narrated his heart-shaking testimony during the mass burial of his three accomplices on Friday.

Francis Onami, 42, who was among the four people who were struck by lightning at a funeral on October 19 at Ibencho area said he survived by the grace of God.

During the incident, Barnabas Machuka, Margaret Obwoge and Josephine Onchong’a succumbed to the injuries.

Onami said he had left the three in the house and gone outside to bring in a goat to slaughter for mourners when he saw blinding yellow light and heard a deafening bang.

Onami, a Catholic Catechist, told mourners at Mesabakwa primary school grounds that the impact was intense and tossed him up before he landed in a heap of mud, unconscious.

There was confusion, as witnesses tried to rescue them and he overheard one suggesting that they cut his ears, as this is said to be the traditional first aid move for lightening victims.

He was then heaped in the same vehicle with Margaret who had not died and rushed to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisii town.

Meanwhile, questions have emerged on who should benefit from the disaster preparedness and mitigation funds set aside by the national government.

Kisii Governor James Ongwae said he wrote to the Devolution Ministry after the lightening incident.

Onami claimed on the way, he sensed Margaret had died but he was too weak to do anything but he has not received any feedback nor have the families been contacted.

Ongwae said lightening arrestors will be installed in schools found in Ibencho which is notorious for deadly strikes.

The county Government gave the family Sh350,000 which they used for funeral and medical expenses.
