Teachers have been urged to sign contracts to facilitate negotiations.

KUPPET secretary general, Akello Misori said all KUPPET members should embrace the signing of the performance contracts.

This comes shortly after the KNUT chair, Wilson Sossion said the contracts will not guarantee quality education to the scholars saying it could do more harm than good.

On the other hand, Misori said teachers should not be afraid of signing the contracts because it was for their own benefit. According to Misori, the contacts will not only guarantee better salaries for teachers but will also allow for the employment of more teachers and better working conditions.

Misori’s sentiments have not been well received by parents in Kibera. One parent, Anne Walumbe said employing more teachers is not a solution.

‘‘The solution is finding out how you will pay these teachers. We cannot employ more teachers yet we can’t afford to pay them,’’ she said.

Another parent, Victor Titus, said the contract issue will make teachers not give the best to scholars. He said some will not even bother to teach knowing they are not fully employed but rather contracted. He cautioned the government against manhandling teachers saying the frequent strikes will affect the future generation since they will not have quality education.
