The war between teachers and Teachers Service Commission seems to be far from over as Borabu teachers ignited the pay rise debate during a burial ceremony of their colleague.

The onslaught comes after teachers' union Knut filed an appeal at the Supreme Court over the controversial salary increment of 50-60 per cent that had earlier on been awarded by an Industrial Court.

Speaking during the event, Borabu Kuppet chairman Mr Ananias Mogere said the government was being unfair on teachers and termed its response to teacher’s plight as naive.

“Sometimes I really wonder who advises the government. It’s so clear that teachers are living in deplorable conditions and the government is busy blocking justice in the court. They may use their power to intimidate us, not knowing that their naive tactics will be countered by the civil power on the ballot,” he said.

Knut Deputy Secretary General (Borabu) Mr Jackson Getabu said it was deceit for the government to condone corruption and in return fail to pay teachers their dues.

“It’s disappointing that the government is tolerating corruption because they cannot even account for the alleged missing Eurobond money and many more scandals and here they are deceiving us that they have no money. They must pay us and as usual that we have an answer to their antics,” he said.

They expressed optimism that the Supreme Court will nullify Court of Appeal's ruling and award teachers the pay hike.
