Three children from the same family are fighting for their lives at Tenwek Hospital in Bomet County after allegedly escaping electrocution following a blast from a meter box.

The three identified as Pius Onderi 12, Kevin Onderi 10, and Jane Kerubo 6, are said to have tampered with electric wires in a meter box without the knowledge of their parents in the Wednesday morning incident at Mwongori village.

According to the eyewitness, Charles Ombogo, the children were playing near the meter box and reportedly interfered with it before the explosion.

“On rushing there, they were physically injured with Pius bleeding profusely. We called for an ambulance and I am glad that they responded in time to rescue them,” he said.

Area MCA  Alfayo Ngeresa who facilitated transporting of the casualties to Tenwek urged the Kenya Power company to carry out regular checkups to avert such incidents.

“It’s unfortunate that Kenya Power can fail to do regular maintenance checkups in many households and I am sure the damage should not have arisen in the first place. It’s their obligation to do so,” he said.

Area Chief,  David Ogega however, cautioned parents against negligence and urged them to be vigilant by guiding their young ones.

“Some may blame Kenya Power, but as parents, we also have a responsibility on certain issues. We have to be vigilant and protect our children,” he said.
