Uasin Gishu County residents have been urged to register with the National Hospital Insurance Fund in a bid to meet their medical expenses.
Speaking in his office on Monday, Moiben MP Silas Tiren said the cost of treatment had skyrocketed beyond the common mwananchi's reach but with the NHIF card, some of the expenses will be catered for.
“If you are bedridden in hospital and you have the NHIF card, your hospital expenses will be catered for and you will only be required to pay a small portion of the money you owe the hospital,” he said.
He said, through registering and becoming a member, you are entitled to quality health care in all approved hospitals by the Fund.
“NHIF caters for the whole family as long as they are not over the age of 18 years, that is for both inpatient and outpatient for as long as you have the card,” he said.
He said cases of patients being unable to pay their medical fees due to huge bills will be a thing of the past if they enlist with the insurer.
According to the Fund's new rates that became effective from April, a worker earning a minimum salary of Sh6,000 pays a monthly fee of Sh150, those not employed on permanent basis Sh500 while those earning Sh100,000 and above pay Sh1,700.
