Nyamira women have been urged to make effective use of loans lent to them by various microfinance institutions and government agencies.
Speaking on Wednesday at Bokeira ward when he visited the Bokeira women group, Governor John Nyagarama said he was concerned with reported cases of a number of women groups defaulting to pay loans in time causing an outcry from some microfinance institutions.
Nyagarama urged women to engage in fruitful businesses after carrying out feasibility studies to avert incidents of making losses from businesses set up from loaned money.
“Whenever you get the loans, it’s your responsibility to ensure that you use them effectively. We don’t want to hear cases of some of you defaulting making it tough for lenders. It’s good to carry our feasibility study on the business that you want to do before fully embarking on the businesses,” he said.
The county boss further challenged women to take advantage of the Women Enterprise Fund (WEF) and support from the county government’s ministry of Trade to embark in businesses that could help them become financially independent.
“It is absurd that some women are still dependent on their husbands even after the offer from the WEF and the relentless support from the county’s ministry of trade. It is now time you applied for those loans to help our society improve,” he added.
Nyagarama warned women groups against being used by ‘greedy’ politicians to destabilise the government of the day.
“If you continue working with politicians who are after destabilising the county government, it will be difficult for you to progress.
The county offers opportunities for you to progress and it is important that you utilise the loans given by the county government and other microfinance institutions for your own benefit,” he added.
