Kisii University is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) so that police officers can be granted 15 per cent discount to pursue various courses at the institution.
Kisii University Vice Chancellor Prof John Akama appealed to police officers to undertake training in relevant academic programs to enhance their performance.
Addressing a Kisii region women administration police officers forum on Tuesday at the regional coordinator’s meeting hall in Kisii, Prof Akama urged them to establish a cordial relationship with the public.
“The police service should discard militarism and embrace a community-friendly approach while executing their duties. Striking a rapport with the citizens would pave way for free exchange of information and hence boost security,” he said.
He said the university offers courses in criminology, peace studies, conflict management and resolution, as well as disaster prevention mitigation, and management which are vital to the police.
He stated that the 15 per cent fee discount is already being enjoyed by teachers after they signed an MoU with Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) last year and that the university intends to roll out programs in leadership and integrity, medicine and law.
