Fishermen at Lake Naivasha have decried the upsurge in illegal and unauthorised fishing saying the vice is threatening their business.

Through the Boat Owners’ Association chairperson David Kiilo, the fishermen said the warders at the facility were not doing enough to end the menace.

Speaking at the Karagita beach after receiving four boats donated by Governor Kinuthia Mbugua, they threatened to boycott and withdraw their services if no action was taken.

"Illegal fishermen have seen the levels of tilapia fish which are our main source of income fall making us struggle economically," noted Kiilo.

He asked the wardens to make good use of the donated boats to intensify night patrols at the facility, a time he said outlawed fishing activity.

"These illegalities are carried out at night because we cast our nets in the evenings but find them displaced in the morning and our catch taken. A majority of us depend on this business to fend for our families, so such issues really affect our lives," he added.

Governor Mbugua donated the boats to fishermen who use the facility to improve on service delivery.
