It is alarming that a number of Kenyans, especially university students, are willing to join terror groups around the world.
A University of Nairobi student was reportedly arrested recently when he attempted to travel to Libya to join ISIS terror group.
The Kenyan youth have become vulnerable to the extremist groups, in which they choose to join majorly due to economic reasons.
Since the young people are addicted towards social media and desire to make huge amounts of money, the terror groups use the medium to lure them into accepting their offers of jobs, money and luxurious living. It is unfortunate that most college students look up to money as the major thing to make their life better.
This notion is the biggest reason why they are easily brainwashed to join terrorism, even when they do not know.
However, according to Mr Ishmael Ondieki, the Kisii University head security officer, the government of Kenya should intensify campaigns in schools and colleges, to train young people on the dangers and how to detect terroristic activities.
Moreover, he says there is need to establish 'Nyumba Kumi' initiatives in the learning institutions, where students will get to understand each other and easily report any suspicious acts to the authority.
