A woman has been sentenced by a Mombasa Court to serve 10 years in prison after she was found guilty of sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl.
The woman, Regina Muthengi, was being accused of sexually assaulting the minor at a primary school in Likoni Estate, Mombasa County.
The minor was defiled on March 18, 2011, by the accused who was entrusted to take care of her. According to a doctor’s report that was presented at the court, the accused, who was a caretaker at the school, attacked the girl with a blunt object which was found to be her finger.
The trial which began in 2011 has dragged on for five years due to the transfer of magistrates who were handling the case.
Mombasa chief magistrate, Susan Shitubi in her ruling found the accused guilty of the charges saying the prosecution has proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Magistrate Shitubi sentenced the accused to 10 years imprisonment but gave her 14 days to appeal the ruling.
