A woman died after she drowned at Syokimau village in Athi River sub county on Monday evening.
Caroline Muia, 26, was swept away by storm water following a heavy rain that was experienced in the region for more than four hours.Speaking to this writer at his office in Mlolongo on Tuesday, Mlolongo Assistant County Commissioner, Obed Mose, said the woman was from her salon located in Syokimau shopping centre and was on her way to her house in Mlolongo town when the incident occurred.
"The woman who was a salonist had just closed her business in Syokimau shopping centre and was headed to her home in Mlolongo town when she was swept away," said Mose.
Mose said the deceased was overwhelmed by the storm since the rains had caused everywhere to flood like a river. He said the body was recovered by officers from Mlolongo Police Station several hours at Sabaki village within Athi River near Valley View Estate where it had been deposited by storm waters and moved to the Machakos Level Five Mortuary.
Mose said the rains flooded and destroyed several houses and household property of unknown value thereby displacing families in the region and especially in Kicheko Slum.
He called on families living in flood prone areas and especially near or along the rivers to vacate and move to safer zones to avoid recurrences of such incidences arguing that the region was still experiencing heavy rains.
