Parents in Kisii have been warned against subjecting their children to forced labour.

Speaking on Friday during prize giving ceremony at Riverbank Academy in Kisii County, Maasai Mara University Kisii Town Campus Director James Omari Ontieri noted that subjecting children to forced labour affects them academically.

Dr Ontieri, who was also the chief guest, challenged stakeholders to join hands in order to improve education standards in the county.

“The relationship between parents and teachers among other stakeholders determines outcomes in our schools. We need to change our attitude and embrace togetherness if we want to effectuate academic preeminence in our schools,” said Ontieri.

The don advised students to fear God and utilise the resources in the school in order to excel morally and academically.

“Work hard now so that you will live a comfortable life in the future. Use the opportunities you have well. The more you get educated, the less the work with good pay.”

He also advised them to take co-curricular activities seriously saying that will enable them know their talent and capitalise on it.

The senior lecturer urged parents to enroll their children in reputable institutions in preparation for job market.

“Riverbank Academy is a reputable school and among few Academy schools in Kisii County that offer quality education.”

Riverbank, a privately sponsored school recorded an impressive performance with all 2015 KCPE candidates passing 100 per cent.

The school had a mean score of 308 marks with Abiathas George, the leading candidate, scoring 404 marks. The last performer scored 265 marks. Abiathas has since joined Nyambaria Boys national school.

“For proper transition and ensuring that your children get quality education, enroll them in higher learning institutions that will equip your children with effective knowledge to enable them take challenges boldly,” Ontieri told parents.

Riverbank Director Josephat Machuki lauded teachers for working selflessly towards ensuring the school posted good grades.

The school manager, Mrs. Dorcas Magoma disclosed that, apart from the normal 8-4-4 syllabus, the school offers computer lessons to learners as part of the efforts to equip them with ICT skills.

The school’s head teacher, Bernard Bosire, commended last year’s candidates for the impressive performance. He said they have a mean score target of 310 points in 2016 KCPE.

“I applaud teachers for the good work. It’s through you, we attained the mark. I urge you to continue with the spirit. I cannot forget our 2015 candidates. You made us proud. Parents were very supportive and instrumental,” said the manager.
