Even after 'war' on bedbugs was declared months ago in Kisumu County, Maseno University students are still struggling with the infestation.
The bedbugs are said to be still giving students residing in New Sunrise Hostels, popularly known as 'Tsunami' sleepless nights even after a pest control team had sprayed the hostels.
Speaking to HiviSasa on Sunday afternoon, Erick Machira, a New Sunrise resident confirmed that the insects were back again in the rooms.
HiviSasa found Machira going to air his mattress in the hot sun.
"The scorching sun can kill, most of the bugs. It helps reduce their numbers, at least you can sleep better for a few days," he said.
County Chief Officer of Health, Ojwang Lusi says getting rid of the insects is very tedious and tricky as the bedbugs spread very fast.
He has been quoted saying that getting rid of the insects requires chemical treatment and warned against the use of insecticides as they can be harmful to people.
Fred Chuanya, a Communications student in Maseno University told HiviSasa that there was no way the bedbug malice could be ended.
He said that the only alternative the university was left with, was to import the bedbug killing machines, a measure that had been taken by Kenyatta University. The two machines cost Kenyatta University Sh1.7 Million.
"We want the administration to buy similar machines to eradicate these insects that are currently terrorising comrades. It is the only solution," he said.
The notorious insects have been known to reside in Maseno’s New Sunrise male hostels A B C D F and H and there are reports of them spreading to the nearby Equator Hostels.
