Residents in Kisii town have asked the Gisii water company to repair the broken sewage pipes saying their health is at risk.
With the ongoing rains, the residents say they fear a cholera outbreak as a result of effluent spillage onto roads and rivers.
They claimed they had raised concerns before and no action was taken.
They now want the Gusii Water and Sanitation Company (GWASCO) to urgently address the matter.
Minto Youth Group Chairman Kepha King’oina said there was a broken sewage pipe at Mwembe near Kisii Cathedral Church from one of residential houses. He said the effluent spills onto the road giving motorists and pedestrians a hectic time.
“We have been complaining to the authorities in charge to take necessary action to help our people since they fear contracting waterborne diseases. Some of the sewage drains into rivers,”Kepha said on Friday.
Other places that are affected are a building near Dados Hotel and a house from Umoja Complex. Gwasco chairman Evans Bosire said his office had noted the complaint and will resolve the problem. He said they will need to replace some of the pipes to end the common occurance.
“We need to change the whole system since the pipes we used were so thick hence the frequent breakages,” “Bosire said.
