In East and Central Africa and entire African continent, Kibera is estimated to be the largest metropolitan slum. It is said to be hosting about 1 million plus people which is roughly 60% of the total slum dwellers in Nairobi. Some of the media personalities and celebrities that make great headlines came from this slum.
Though slums are linked to lots of evil deed in the society, there are public figures who actually survived in Kibera slums and rose to fame having defied all the stereotypes linked to this shanty town estate. Here is a short list of 5 celebrities that made it living in Kibera and are now famous and making news headlines often.
1. Johnson Mwakazi
A media icon and former News Anchor at Citizen TV. Mwakazi spent the better part of his youth life in the slums of Kibera and is not ashamed to talk about the kind of experience he went through living in Kibera slums.
2. Larry Asego
Another export from Kibera slums is Classic FM’s Larry Asego. Before making it out to the city life, this presenter lived and called Kibera a home for quite a long time. He is proud that Kibera shaped part of his life.
3. Octopizzo
Conceivably “Number Nane” could be one of the fine finest Kibera slum exports. He has always been proud of the slum as his hood and thus his name “Number Nane” emanating from the route number Kibera matatus use. Kenya prides of Octopizzo as one of its finest rappers representing her up to the international levels in music entertainment industry.
4. Dennis Oliech
Oliech too lived and called the county’s biggest slum a home for a long time. He kicked poverty out of his way through his talent in football. Oliech still play football that saw him out of Kibera till today for AC Ajaccio, France.
5. Kriss Darling
The renowned and Kenya’s most celebrated reggae DJ was brought up in Kibera slums and still lives there to date. Kriss has been so reluctant to change his hood, unlike other celebrities who moved out after making a life.
