Six persons living with disabilities in Gatundu North in Kiambu County at the weekend received a donation of 24 goats to start businesses and boost their incomes.
Human rights officer from Gatundu North Janet Wangari Sub-County presented the goats to the six at her office on Saturday.
Wangari at the same time appealed to chiefs and their assistants to take a census of all disabled people in their areas of jurisdiction to enable them receive help from the National Council for Disabled of Kenya annually.
“The county has over 5,000 disabled persons but many of them have not been registered with the Social Services Department and therefore are not benefiting from the council funds,” revealed the human rights officer.
She disclosed that many parents in the county hide their disabled children due to fear of stigmatisation.
“The disabled have the right to live, be loved by their parents and members of public. They need respect from other members of society and should have access to property which helps them to succeed in life,” said Wangari.
Wangari further appealed to chiefs and their assistants to take a stern action on parents found hiding their disabled children either at home or in rural areas instead of taking them to school.
