Nakuru environment director Kiogora Muriithi has disclosed that roads leading to Giotto dumpsite will be upgraded to mitigate the effects of the expected El Nino rains and ease transportation of refuse.
“The county government has put in place urgent measures to upgrade all roads leading to Giotto to ensure solid waste does not interfere with the health of Nakuru residents,” said Kiogora.
The director said the county government will deal with garbage issue in all estates in the county to prevent diseases.
Speaking to the media in his office on Friday, Kiogora admitted that the filthy Gioto dumpsite has been a health concern to residents and the business community.
“The stinking garbage heaps are an eyesore in Giotto, creating unbearable conditions for neighbouring residents,” he added.
He said the county government is committed to addressing concerns about the dumpsite and has allocated money towards the same.
“In the current financial year, department has been allocated Sh367 million to cater for the expansion of infrastructure and remuneration of workers to improve the lives of Nakuru residents,” he said.
Kiogora said the Nakuru government is ready to cooperate with investors in the rehabilitation of the dumpsite which has been in existence for over 50 years.
Meanwhile, he urged residents to help in maintaining a tidy Nakuru to attract investors.
“"Investors are exploring business opportunities in the county, and it is therefore essential that residents provide a favourable framework that will attract many of them to invest," he Kiogora.
