Residents of Githunguri Sub County are crying foul over the neglect of the Githunguri stadium which they say has been turned into a drugs den.
Speaking to HiviSasa, Mary Kariuki, who runs a kiosk near the stadium, said that currently all kinds of drugs are traded at the stadium, targeting unemployed youths.
She lamented that the stadium that was built to tap and nurture talents had been turned into a security threat.
Meanwhile, Githunguri MP Njoroge Baiya who spoke on phone, urged the national government to come up with initiatives to improve the living standards of many Kenyans and cushion youths from problems resulting from unemployment.
He, however, wondered why the youth engage in drug and substance abuse instead of getting loans from the Women Enterprise Fund and Uwezo and Youth Enterprise funds to start businesses to eke out a living.
“The government has provided loans at no or very low interest rates. The youths should maximise this opportunity to start viable projects instead of engaging in unethical practices,” the legislature stated.
Though, he did not delve further, the MP said plans are underway to improve the standards of the stadium which is currently in a dilapidated state for youths to exploit their potentials.
As a way of creating jobs, he said there were plans to rehabilitate the Gatina-Githiga Road in Githunguri, targeting youths.
