A commissioner with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has urged the national government through the Ministry of Education to involve teachers in the fight against terrorism

Commissioner Linda Ochiel said schools have become soft targets for terrorists who recruit students through their radicalisation and extremism teachings, and that teachers are better placed to know if there are any changes in their learners.

In this light, Ochiel revealed that the commission has rolled out a programme dubbed Amani clubs that is meant to spearhead peace and anti-radicalisation messages in schools.

The programme, she added, will educate students on the effects and dangers or radicalisation.

"We will start by reaching out and engaging teachers since they are close and understand students better. This makes them to understand their behaviour and if there is a change, it is easy to note. Students are also able to open up to them thus they can easily be helped to shun radicalisation," she said.

Speaking in Eldoret town on Monday, she said NCIC will support Amani clubs to enhance integration in schools.
