The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, in collaboration with the Nubian Rights Forum on Monday launched a birth registration exercise in Kibera.

The drive which ends on Friday, is meant to ensure that the residents register for birth certificates to avoid cases of becoming stateless.

The registration will take place at Makina, DC, Laini Saba, Indi and Gatwekera areas.

Residents have been urged to actively participate since it will not last longer.

The exercise was launched by Makina MCA Alhad Adam who urged parents to also ensure that their children are registered too.

Citing the importance of having a birth certificate, the ward representative said it is important because residents will need it when seeking other documents such as national identity cards.

“Nobody will have an excuse of not registering. This process is quick, convenient and cheaper,” said Adam.

The mobile registration drive will cost Sh150 million.

The MCA congratulated those who turned up for the exercise.

He asked residents to maintain peace so as to keep Kibera a peaceful place.

Hussein Shasha who came to register his son hailed the exercise saying it is quick and cheaper.

Comparing to the other process where one has to apply and wait for a longer time, Shasha said he is positive that he will soon get the son’s birth certificate.

However, Jane Oyier said she has cannot register her child because it was born in a different county.
