Police on Tuesday arrested several students in Machakos Town for engaging in a street fight fuelled by inter-school rivalry.
The students, who are among several others who have been loitering in the streets since Monday, were later released by the Sub-County Administration Police Commander (DAPC) who advised them to remain at home during the ongoing teachers strike that is in its second week.
The students, most of them wearing uniforms of different schools in Machakos, Nairobi and a few from Kiambu counties spent the better part of Tuesday strolling and purchasing items in several retail outlets resulting in significant littering through plastic cups and polythene papers.
A section of the students engaged in a fist fight after confrontations turned hostile in what HiviSasa established to be an age-old inter-school rivalry.
Machakos DAPC, Stephen Matu cautioned the students against involvement in crime and directed them to ensure they leave the town for either home or school since their parents knew they were in school.
Matu who was speaking to the arrested students in his office said that he was saddened by the incident and warned them against idling in the town noting that some of them were not in school uniform.
“We have released you as we are not after ruining your lives. Let us not bump into each other anymore as we are going to arrest you,” Matu said.
