Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has encouraged residents to venture into horticulture farming saying that the sector is lucrative.
Speaking to the press after meeting with members of the Lake Naivasha Growers Council (LNGC) at a Naivasha hotel on Friday, Mbugua said that the horticulture sector is the backbone of the county's economy.
Mbugua said that through horticulture the county has been able to explore international markets across the world.
"The flower sector contributes a large percentage of our income as a county. My government is keen to promote the growth of this industry," he said.
He revealed that the county had partnered with various local and international flower firms to boost the sector.
“Flower farming is one of the lucrative ventures Nakuru people should embrace and help grow our economy, “he said.
The Nakuru governor recognised the high number of jobs created by several horticultural companies in the county.
"Naivasha alone has over 70 companies. These companies have created many job opportunities for our people," he observed.
Mbugua urged the flower firms to adhere to the environmental and labour regulations to avoid confrontations which he said would derail development. He pledged to work with companies to increase employment and output.
