The Assistant Director, Climate Prediction Service, Kenya Meteorological Department James Muhindi has called on Kenyans not to down play the El Nino warnings.

Muhindi said most Kenyans have grown weary of the predication and urged them to be patient as the rains are imminent.

“The onset of the rains was caused by deviations in climate change and these do not mean there will be no El Nino,” said the meteorologist.

His remarks come at a time when the El Nino predictions have sparked an outcry from the public and called on local climate experts to disseminate accurate weather forecasts.

The public said forecasts and warnings on severe weather conditions should be communicated to the public as soon as possible if they are to be of any use.

Speaking Friday in Naivasha town during a meeting on the level of preparedness by the national government to mitigate the effects of El Nino, Muhindi called for patience from the public and urged them to reinforce the preparations to mitigate the effects of the rains.

He said records from the Met Department show Nyanza and Coast regions which are prone flooding are receiving very heavy rains.
