More than 500 cartons of alcohol were impounded in Kisumu by police in the ongoing countrywide crackdown on illicit brew.
The liquor, stashed at a bungalow in the expansive Millimani Estate, is said to belong to an owner of one of the popular clubs in the lakeside city.
The liquor was confiscated just a few metres from where a senior police officer in Kisumu lives as questions emerged on how the business thrived without his knowledge.
Assistant Inspector General of Police Joseph Keitany said the raid was done jointly with the help of officials from the Kenya Bureau of Standards alongside those from the National Environmental Management Authority.
“We are keen to report that the ongoing raid on illicit brew is on course and we are doing everything possible to ensure we clear the county of the killer drinks,” he said.
Keitany lauded the Administration Police Quick Response Team led by Karanja Muiruri on their war against illicit liquor.
Speaking to the press at the scene on Thursday, he said they will continue with the fight to eliminate illicit brews in the county.
The raid follows a similar one last Monday where police impounded illicit alcohol worth Sh5 million in Nubian Estate.
And on Sunday, police confiscated more than 6,000 litres of liquor in a brewery adjacent to the state house lodge.
Last Friday, nearly 40 people said to be selling illicit brew in Obunga Estate and around the Kisumu bus park were arrested.
During the Friday arrest, about 570 litres of busaa, 470 litres of Kangara, 50 kg of bhang and 75 litres of chang’aa were impounded.
