Police in Thika on Sunday nabbed four suspects who were in possession of Sh56,000 in fake currency. They had allegedly been circulating the money in the sub-county.
According to Thika OCPD, Erastus Muthamia, the police arrested one of the suspects in Kiganjo where the public reported him after he made a purchase from a supermarket.
Muthamia said that after interrogation, the suspect took the police to a residential house in Kimuchu where they have been making the fake notes and arrested the other three.
Police confiscated the notes from the suspects and the equipments they had been using to make them. Muthamia told the press that the suspects have admitted that they have been forced to circulate the fake currency by people from Thika who came and distribute to other parts of the country.
He added that they have identified a prominent person from Thika who has been facilitating the business and they are set to make the arrest and prosecute him after thorough investigations.
The OCPD has called on the public to be careful while dealing with money and to report any incident immediately as the suspects have admitted to have circulated over Sh40,000 in Thika town in the last one week.
He said they are working closely with Kenya Revenue Authority to supply the residents with as many validators and detectors to facilitate the verification of money.
