Police in Mombasa have launched a manhunt for three assailants killed by a police officer and escaped with his rifle at a Mombasa bank on Friday.
Mombasa OCPD, Martin Asin who confirmed the incident said the officer was guarding the Gulf African Bank in Bondeni, Mombasa.
Asin told journalists that the assailants went to the bank posing as customers and approached the officer who was guarding it.
According to the OCPD, two officers were guarding the bank but the incident happened when the other officer was inside the bank.
OCPD Asin said: “The robbers who were posing as customers approached the officer guarding the bank when his colleague had gone into the bank.”
“While they were talking with the officer they suddenly snatched his G3 rifle and shot him in the head before escaping with the loaded gun,” he added.
According to witnesses who had gathered at the scene, the robbers were hooded and they escaped on foot.
One of the witnesses who spoke to journalists on condition of anonymity said the gunmen after shooting the officer did not bother to enter into the bank to steal anything.
“The gunmen exchanged words with the guard at the bank then robbed him of his gun before shooting him.”
