A road contractor from Nyamira County has been summoned following complaints by Mecheo-Chebingombe residents of alleged delay in repairing the road linking the two trading centres.

The County Assembly Roads Committee on Tuesday responded to the complaints launched by the residents from the region by summoning the contractor to appear before it by Friday this week.

Speaking at the assembly’s building in Nyamira, Chairman Ben Sironga accused the Finlays and Son’s Company of delaying the completion of the road for over 14 months since it was awarded the contract.

However, the company's director refuted the claims saying the county government had not paid the down payment for the second phase of the project.

“We had to summon them because that is our mandate. This is the third time we are receiving complaints from the same residents and I think time has come for us to do the necessary, and that is why we have issued the summons,” said Sironga.

The Rigoma Ward rep warned contractors of violating their contracts and promised stiff actions towards those who may be found committing the offence.

“Contractors should stop giving representatives unnecessary stress. They must honour their obligations or else they face the law. We will soon fix some laws pertaining contracting to avert such crisis,” he added.

Speaking in a phone interview, the company’s Director Mr Finlay Ongeri revealed that they had agreed with the county government to repair the road in two phases with a down payment in each phase.

“We have no mistake at all because they only gave a down payment of the first phase. We are waiting for the second down payment and the ministry of transport has failed to give us an ear but we will let the transport committee know that,” said Ongeri.
