Salaried employees in Kisumu County have been challenged to start businesses that will help supplement their incomes.
Kisumu County sociologist Florence Atera challenged the locals to embrace entrepreneurship saying it will improve their living standards and those that they will hire to manage the businesses on their behalf.
“We encourage locals both the employed and unemployed to be more innovative by using their skills to come up with business opportunities. This will improve their living standards since the employed will have additional income while the unemployed will get jobs thus making them self-reliant,” noted Atera.
On his part, human rights activist Killen Omondi faulted the county government over its laxity to educate its residents on the importance of embracing entrepreneurship.
He urged the county to come up with initiatives that will see locals become innovative by funding them as well as empowering them with skills.
According to him, an economically empowered public is better than a dependent one, hence the need for the county to create a conducive environment to make it self-reliant.
The two were addressing journalists on Tuesday at the Imperial Hotel in Kisumu.
