University students across Kisii County have been urged to quit alcohol and drug abuse, and instead focus their energy on studies.
Kisii County Alcoholic Drinks and Control Board director Augustine Marube said that many college students are indulging in alcohol abuse at the expense of their studies.
Citing the recent crackdown of illicit brew in various parts of Kisii and its environs, he said the reports his office shows many students in Kisii County are involved in alcohol abuse than any other drug.
Speaking in Kisii on Tuesday, he further observed that there is easy access to alcohol, because of the increased number of bars in and around colleges and universities that has been brought up in Kisii County.
“University students should take their studies seriously and desist from alcohol and drug abuse, their parents are paying fees to get knowledge and not to be wasted by alcohol and other drugs,” he said.
Marube said that the ongoing crackdown against illegal alcohol would be extended to other areas in the county, and called upon the respective administrations to help the government to fight alcoholism.
He ordered for the immediate closure of bars and pubs operating within campuses, saying they could be selling illegal alcoholic drinks to students.
He observed that bars are required to operate 300 meters away from learning institutions.
