Thirty nine Maseno University students on Wednesday appeared before the institution’s disciplinary committee to answer to allegations of flouting examination rules.

The students are accused of sitting for the end of semester examinations while their fees was in arrears

The students will receive the verdict at a future date when the committee concludes its investigations as no specific timeline was given.

Some of the students who were summoned by the disciplinary committee insisted that the situation was not their own making.

“I paid my school fees but it was not updated on time, therefore the fault is not mine at all. I am even surprised to that I have to face this panel in the first place its really unfair,” Abel Koech, a student said.

Other students said that they depended on the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), but it failed to disburse the money on time therefore forcing them to sit for exams with their fees in arrears.

A Member of the panel who requested anonymity said that the process will be fair.

“We guarantee fairness in the whole process because we understand the situation of some students. Provided they produce evidence to support their claims then all will be well,” said the member.

Some students with balances as low as Sh100 were also summoned indicating the seriousness the institution had regarding fees arrears.

Universities do not allow students to sit their examinations without having cleared their due fees for the current semester of study in good time. Those cleared for examinations are issued with examination cards for invigilators to identify them while administering the tests.

Cases of students forging examination cards have been reported in institutions of higher learning as students try device ways of completing their education.
