Located in Ayany village in Kibera, the Vision Sisters have launched a sanitation centre which helps residents access toilets and bathrooms.
According to the organisation’s chairman Rick Moses, the centre has greatly helped residents from the interior parts of the slum access toilet facilities at an affordable price.
It costs Sh5 to get toilet services at the facility, and this is aimed at eliminating the flying toilets menace.
“We charge Sh10 for a person to shower which is healthy since we provide them with enough water and clean bathrooms,” said Rick on Thursday.
The centre which is opened throughout the week has helped to reduce cases of open defecation and dirt in Ayany.
However, manager Rick complained of water shortage in the area mostly during the weekends and holidays.
“Water is the main problem. At the moment we do not have water in the taps because of the Nairobi International Trade Fair. We are forced to buy it, which is a big challenge on our side,’’ he lamented.
Rick revealed that they have plans to open more sanitation centers in Kibera and other slum areas within and outside Nairobi.
The centre is sponsored by the Embassy of Sweden and was implemented by Maji Na Ufanisi in 2012.
