Herbal clinics in Kenya have gradually been gaining ground in recent times.

And with the cost of modern treatment going through the roof, some people turn to herbalists in search of treatment for their aliments.

Situated at Olympic Junction, Kibera, there is a clinic that sells traditional medicine to customers from the area and the neighbouring villages such as Makina and Kamukunji.

According to the owner, herbalist Jacinta Achieng, the shop attracts quite a lot of people who cannot afford hospital medication.

“Our medicine can cure diseases such as asthma, allergy among other diseases,” she claims.

“Different medicines treat different diseases. We have seeds, roots and leaves. We have both fresh and dried ones. They can also be in powder form,” she added.

Speaking in her shop on Wednesday, Achieng said she has been in the business for 23 years.

“I get medicines from my rural home in Kisumu. I have been in this business long enough having inherited it from my father who was a herbalist,” said Achieng.

However, she says there are instances when some of the clients query her on how she gets the herbs, how she makes them and if they have side effects.

Lillian Owino who claimed has used Achieng’s medicine said it is cheap and so far has not experienced any challenges.
