Followers of Life Ministries have been urged to allow their children to be immunised against polio as the exercise continues in Thika west Sub-county.
The followers, who have been at loggerheads with the medical personnel’s and administrators in the area, have been against the campaign, saying they don't believe in conventional medicine.
"For a long time, the followers of this church have been giving our medics a hard time and in most cases police have had to intervene to have their children vaccinated,’ Dr Andrew Kabui, who is among the officials coordinating the exercise in the area, told journalist in Thika on Friday.
"The exercise targets over 7,000 children within the sub-county and I call upon parents with children below five years to bring them for immunisation irrespective irrespective of whether they had been vaccinated before," he said.
He called on all residents of Thika to take advantage of the exercise to have their children inoculated against the disease, which has been reported in the neighboring countries such as Somalia and Ethiopia.
Catholic bishops had also urged citizens to boycott a mass polio vaccination campaign until the safety of the vaccine is confirmed through scientific tests.
The bishops questioned the safety of the vaccines, saying the manufacturer failed to provide requested information and the government disregarded the bishops’ request for tests.
