Residents of Athi River sub-county need to understand how the police operate so as to improve their relationship and build a level of trust.

"Majority of the residents from Athi River sub-county do not understand how police forces operate in undertaking their mandate while the few who know have become ignorant on them, hence the negative attitudes amongst some of them on security agents," said Athi River police boss, Kizito Mutoro who was speaking in his office on Friday.

Mutoro said a number of the residents had occasionally complained about instances when suspects of different crimes had been released from the police station's cells either on cash bail or for lack of evidence.

According to him, it is needless for a suspect to be presented in court without enough evidence because prosecution stands higher chances to lose the case than win it.

"Most cases which end no where beyond the police stations do so due to lack of adequate evidence since complainants and witnesses give circumstantial evidences. Our officers with aid of the intelligence service unit conduct thorough investigations on each and every case reported at our police stations" said Mutoro.

The police boss said it could be wrong for the police to take for instance ten cases in court for only two to get through successfully.

Mutoro urged witnesses from the region to check their facts right and give primary evidences whenever they recorded evidences so as to give their cases strength when taken to court.

This statement comes barely a month since a group of women from Athi River town demonstrated against release of a rape suspect from Athi River police station.

He said complainants should be aware of consequences of pursuing cases in court without adequate evidences asserting that law can eventually turn back to the plaintiff if sued by defendant for damages.
