Cases of fire incidents in Ayany have greatly reduced thanks to Kenya Power’s efforts to conduct a proper electricity connection in the area.

According to Danny Omolo Otieno, the fires were usually caused by power overloading resulting from electricity theft.

“Many people used to tap electricity without properly connecting the wires. Therefore, many wires were left exposed and hanging which could easily catch fire if tampered with or exposed to a lot of heat,’’ said Otieno on Thursday.

The residents are thankful to Kenya Power for conducting proper wiring which was done last week and hope that the power tapping menace will cease.

“We live in the interior parts of Kibera and rescue services such as fire fighting equipment find it hard to maneuver to this area during fire outbreaks due to the narrow roads. Whenever there is a fire, we are forced to put it out on our own. Water is our biggest challenge meaning that the fire can easily consume houses before we contain it,” added Otieno.

The residents, however, plan to start a welfare account to help families whose houses may be burnt or whose properties could be destroyed by electricity fires.
