A lobby group in Kisumu has come to the aid of a visually impaired cobbler whose house collapsed a few months ago.

Joseph Onyango, who hails from Kisumu East's Kajulu Ward, had narrated his plight to journalists last month.

The 36-year-old cobbler says he lost his eyesight at the age of three when his father slapped him hard in the face. Onyango told the press that since that incident he was never able to see again.

Speaking to Hivisasa on Wednesday when the lobby group known as the Kisumu Market/Milimani group visited him, Onyango said that his parents later abandoned him and left him under the care his grandparents.

He says he managed to pursue education at the Thika School for the Visually Impaired up to form three, but could not proceed further due to lack of money after the grandparents passed away.

"I have been earning a living by mending shoes. I am now living in my neighbour's house because the house which was left for me by my grandparents collapsed a few months ago," said Onyango.

According to the group's secretary Beryl Okal, he has severally applied for a national Identity Card unsuccessfully.

"We have come here today to ensure that we help him in building a house, food and clothing and seeing into how we can help promote his business," said Okal.

Ogra Foundation in Kisumu has already committed to build him a house.
