Residents of Bogichora Ward in Nyamira County have urged the government to consider reshuffling provincial administrators in the region in a bid to fight rising insecurity.

Speaking on Monday during the funeral of John Oganga, who is said to have been hacked to death by a group of armed assailants, residents accused chiefs and their assistants of laxity.

The residents claimed the administrators only concentrate on arresting illicit brewers and have abandoned the issue of insecurity, which they said has partly made the area inhabitable.

“The level of insecurity in the region is worrying and something urgent has to be done. The only solution to this is to reshuffle chiefs and their assistants. They are concentrating on light issues and end up abandoning security matters,” said Fred Omara.

The residents said reshuffling of the officers will partly improve transparency in the manner in which they are handling security issues in the region.

“To put these government officers on toes, they must be transferred to other regions where they can work without necessarily sparing their friends who might be found on the wrong. We have seen a number of people being set free after committing crime,” added Beatrice Ooga.

Retired Borabu Chief Justus Ong’era, however, cautioned the residents against the move saying it is likely to make governance difficult.

“It will be difficult for chiefs to work in unfamiliar territories. Let us be cautious about the move because it is likely to be detrimental to governance,” he said.
