Livestock traders along the Kisii-Migori border have been advised tread carefully when purchasing livestock for slaughter.

Chief Kingsley Ombasa of Nyanchenge location says he has received reports that in the main border market located at Nyachenge, traders are dealing with stolen livestock.

Ombasa has advised the traders to involve village elders as well as state and county administration officials when purchasing animals to avert cases of purchasing stolen animals.

According to one trader in Nyanchenge market, over the last few weeks there have been several cases of theft in the area with those behind it selling the animals mainly to unsuspecting butchery operators.

Addressing livestock traders at Nyanchenge market on Monday the chief urged them to consult elders and local administrators who are familiar with villagers and can easily identify genuine and bogus livestock sellers.

“We want genuine trade since we are on the border. Do not let our market be used as the illegal trading centre, always involve elders when buying and selling your animals to avoid,” said Ombasa.
