Thika deputy registrar of persons has said birth registration in Thika West Sub-County is below 60 per cent and chiefs and their assistants should ensure it is scaled up to at least 90 per cent during the current registration of birth for Kenyans below 18 years.

Addressing chiefs and their assistants on Monday at the Thika offices John Kamonye said the ongoing exercise will help in keeping records in the office of the civic registrar for easier issuance of birth certificates.

“Take the exercises seriously without fear for you are mandated by the constitution to carry out the exercise as registration officers,” said Kamonye.

Kamonye said the locations and sub-locations committees are critical in birth registration for they are in the grassroots and any information they capture can be relied on.

He reiterated that the committees that were formed to ensure success of the programme should be all inclusive and should consider the diverse groups in Thika region and ensure gender balance.

“Those being registered in the ongoing process are the ones who failed to register on time and are not captured anywhere in regard to birth notification from hospitals or birth certificate,” he added.
