The Coast Provincial General Hospital will start offering kidney transplant services at the facility in 2016.
The hospital's Chief administrator, Dr Iqbal Khandwalla said the hospital has entered into a partnership with Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to offer kidney transplant services in Mombasa County.
Mr Khandwalla said kidney transplant services will be of benefit to many residents who spend a lot of money traveling to Nairobi to seek the same services.
“Within the next three months, the Coast Provincial General Hospital will start the kidney transplant program. This is after we had fruitful discussions with our partners from KNH.”
Dr Khandwalla said the Mombasa County government will set up a state-of-the-art oncology centre at the hospital.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Dr Khandwalla said the coast hospital will soon start conducting other specialised operations.
“KNH has a huge backlog of patients and this partnership will help in decongesting KNH through offering specialised operations,” he said.
The chief administrator said that in July, the coast hospital carried out three successful open-heart surgeries and the patients have now recovered and are doing well at home.
Dr Khandwalla added that the hospital will soon be transformed into a speciality referral hospital.
