The opposition, Cord is set to continue with its kipande initiative in its Nyanza stronghold with Nyamira and Kisii counties being the target this weekend.

The initiative dubbed Tokeleze ID is part of the wider strategy of sensitising residents in CORD strongholds particularly in Nyanza, Western and Coast regions to apply for national identification cards ahead of the 2017 polls.

Speaking at Marsh Park Hotel on Thursday, ODM Secretary General Ababu Namwamba who is spearheading the initiative urged residents who had attained 18 years to turn up in large numbers for the exercise.

“Registration of identity card is not just used as a political vehicle. We want residents to take the exercise seriously and turn up in large numbers. IDs are crucial because they allow people to get crucial services and that is why we have come to Nyamira and Kisii,” he said.

Ababu accused the government of delaying registration of people in perceived Cord strongholds and reiterated the commitment of the opposition to ensure residents get the critical document.

“We have taken statics and I can say without fear of contradiction that the government is segregating certain regions. Being a citizen of this nation dictates that the government must give all crucial documents. I will continue rallying for registration,” he said.

The Budalang’i MP urged Kisii and Nyamira residents who voted overwhelmingly for the opposition to remain in Cord.

Meanwhile, the lawmaker urged the government to pay the striking teachers.

“I know people from Gusii region will never disappoint us. Otherwise I want to urge the government to respect the court order and pay teachers.
