A young couple was on Monday sentenced for two years in jail by a Kiambu court after after admitting to being in possession of bhang.
Millicent Njoki and her husband, James Ndungu, had been charged with selling the drug but they told Principal Magistrate Diana Mochache that the bhang was for Ndung’u’s personal use.
Ndung’u, who walks with the aid of crutches because his left leg is paralysed, said he smoked the bhang to ease the pain in his right leg.
The prosecutor Richard Mackenzie, said the couple who reside in Banana, were found with 16 rolls of the drug and some more in a sack by officers from the Kiambu Police Patrol Base on June 5th.
The Prosecutor who produced the drugs in court said the officers were acting on a tip off when they searched the couple’s house and found the marijuana.
“I admit that bhang was in our house. But I use it because I’ve got a numb left leg. It helps ease the pain on my good leg,” Ndung’u told the court.
The couple begged the court for lenience as they had children and that they would not repeat the offence if forgiven. They were given two weeks to appeal the sentence.
